Six Summit Gallery

Took in an interesting sculpture exhibit today at the Six Summit Gallery in Ivoryton, CT. Most of the pieces needed to be in my house and/or yard. But unfortunately none will move there. You should keep this place on your radar, lots of good things in the planning stage. Ate at the Ivoryton Tavern just about next door. Click over to the restaurant blog for review.

Went to the opening and then today again to view the Jack McConnell photo show. Magnificent pictures of Park Street. Don't miss it.

a day with[out] art...

Visited Real Art Ways this afternoon to engage in any of today's events. This is AIDS Awareness Day. The place was deserted but I did watch parts of the documentary in the video gallery. I had missed Aricoco's performance last month so was able to see her construction. Being alone in the gallery with  her home/cocoon/trailer was a  great experience.

Went to the opening of the DIRT Salon in Hartford and it was amazing. What a great new place for artists [and onlookers like me]. Met so many people I knew. There was food [a great looking paella] and liquor [had a nice glass of vinho verde] but room after room of studio, work space, gathering space...

'Poster Boy' Opening

Attended the Poster Boy opening tonight at RAW in Hartford. Trinity's loss is definitely Real Art Ways' gain. It was a great show and people were still streaming in when I left.

New Britain Museum of American Art

I will never be able to forget this painting and each time I view it, it continues to stun me. This is Graydon Parrish's 'The Cycle of Terror and Tragedy'. I had the privilege of viewing it once again yesterday on my visit to the NBMAA to view their 'Provincetown' show once more before it finishes this weekend.

Hartford Belle

Spent a wonderful afternoon on the Hartford Belle going up and down the Connecticut River and into the Wethersfield Cove. This was a livingsocial coupon so it cost us only $20 for the two trips of an hour and a half. The weather was magnificent!

RAW Rock Tour [CT]

Spent a beautiful sunny spring day with Real Art Ways on a ROCK TOUR with Dr. Robert Thorsen. We left RAW at 10am and returned about 2:30. 'Thor' led us through varied rock formations around the state. He is teaching at UCONN and is really the to-go-to expert in this area on geology and rock walls. Olu Oguibe the artist responsible for 'Mgbidi, New England field  stones', an installation from last year at RAW was also with us. We traveled to Somersville, Crystal Lake, Stafford Canyon, Storrs, Horse Barn Hill Road where we ate our bag lunches, and then on home via Bolton Notch.

Escher @NBMAA

Made a visit to the Escher exhibit at the New Britain Museum of American Art today. This was my second time there but saw things I had missed earlier. The video of the 'Snakes' was intriguing. 

The show closes on November 14th, so go see it. The Escher that I liked in the Gift Shop was $4700; signed and matted but not in my price level.

artful afternoon...

Spent the afternoon looking at some good artwork.

First we went to the Hartford Public Library to see Kyle Andrew Phillips work. Read the review from the Hartford Courant. I saw his show at the Charter Oak Cultural Center earlier and really liked one of the pieces, Rust#1. So I have made arrangements to purchase it and will get it in January after the library show closes. I am looking forward to adding this to my collection.


Then on to the Wadsworth Atheneum to see the 'American Moderns on Paper' show.
Many of my favorite artists were on display there: Marin, O'Keeffe, Dalí, Tanguy and Noguchi. The show was a lot larger than I had expected  and showed the importance to American modernists of working on paper rather than on canvas.

The Philip Johnson Glass House

We visited the Glass House in New Canaan today. It was a smooth ride down the Merritt to exit 38. Parked in the Park Street lot with a lot of quarters but it worked out well. Met at the Visitor Center at 199 Elm Street and had a brief intro. The shuttle bus ride was about five minutes long. The tour was fantastic! The main house is, of course, the big attraction but both the art and sculpture galleries are not to be missed. The weather was beautiful and the foliage was prime time.

Then back to the visitor center, the parking lot and [with some additional quarters] off to a super lunch at Le Pain Quotidien.

Haight-Brown Vineyard

Foliage Trip to Litchfield, CT

and Haight-Brown Vineyard

Went for a nice long ride through Litchfield today to view the foliage on this sunny day, stopped for lunch and then went to a wine-tasting at the Haight-Brown Vineyard. We tasted nine wines; four of which we liked. These were two Chardonnay [one oaked and the other aluminum vatted], a dry Rosé and a 'Picnic Red' which was a varietal with Shiraz. 

The Wine Room upstairs had a decent selection of wine for sale by the bottle and a wine bar for wine by the glass. The view from the balcony over the vineyard was beautiful and we will come back next year on our own.
